Ableton Live 12 Utility phase vs PHIXER continuous rotation for mono-safe bass
Live 12 Utility can invert Phase L/R, collapse Width, and park lows with Bass Mono. That is the stock first pass. Continuous phase rotation is a different job: leftover stereo bass that still cancels by band after Utility hygiene. This page is the Live 12 comparison. The broader Ableton map is Utility / Width / Returns / Max.

PHIXER is free stereo phase-repair (VST3/CLAP/AU · Win/Mac/Linux). Amount / From / To rotate problem bands so mono fold keeps low end without flattening stereo. It is not a replacement for Utility Phase Invert, Bass Mono, or Width 0%. Polarity and timing first.
What Live 12 Utility already does
Phase Invert L / R
A 180° flip on one side. First fix for DI+mic, dual-cab, or a parallel rack that fights the dry path. If body returns immediately, stop. You do not need spectral rotation.
Bass Mono
Parks energy below a cutoff in the Mid. Useful when Side-only lows bloom in headphones and vanish on a phone speaker. It is a fold tool, not a repair of L/R phase fights above that cutoff.
Width 0% (true mono audition)
Drop Utility on Master. Set Width to 0%. Toggle it. That is the Live 12 mono-check. Session headphones lie. See the bedroom phase FAQ.
Where stock Utility stops
- Cancel is band-specific. Lows gone, mids still wide. A single 180° flip is too blunt. Bass Mono can hide the Side, but the stereo bed still fights on fold.
- The part must stay stereo. A stereo sample, Group print, or return bed that you cannot collapse to mono without losing the image.
- Utility Phase already tried. Invert did not restore body. Delay-align did not either. Residual L/R spectral fight remains.
Prove cancel on purpose first: stereo null test / correlation check. Fit map vs polarity-only and RX-style tools: continuous rotation vs RX / polarity.
Live 12 decision table
| You notice… | First try (stock) | Then |
|---|---|---|
| Body returns when you flip Utility Phase | Keep the invert. Done. | Do not reach for PHIXER. |
| Side-only rumble on headphones | Bass Mono on that track or Group | Re-check Width 0% on Master. |
| Stereo bass still hollows by band after invert + Bass Mono | Null-test / correlation | PHIXER Amount / From / To on that stereo bed. |
| Haas delay or Max imager huge in cans | Bypass the widener | Utility Width honesty. Not a repair job. |
| Mono sample alone is dull | Tone / EQ / sample choice | Not an L/R phase job. |
Live 12 habit (about 90 seconds)
- Utility on Master. Width 0%. Note what disappears (kick body, bass Mid, vocal chest).
- On dual paths: Utility Phase Invert one side. Re-check Width 0%.
- If Side-only lows are the problem, enable Bass Mono on that track. Re-check.
- If a stereo bed still cancels by band, audition PHIXER. A/B with the plugin bypassed, Utility Width still at 0%.
When PHIXER helps in Live 12
- The clip or Group is already stereo and must stay stereo.
- Utility Phase, Bass Mono, and small delay-align are cleaned up.
- You can hear clearer mono body with PHIXER engaged and the image still usable in stereo.
- You are not using it to replace Bass Mono or to "fix" Haas width.
When NOT to use PHIXER here
- You have not Utility-mono auditioned Master yet.
- Phase Invert or Bass Mono already restored the fold.
- You want PHIXER as a widener or a Live 12 Utility clone. Wrong job.
- The path is mono and the print problem is balance or EQ.
Quick path: Live 12 Utility Width 0% → Phase Invert on dual paths → Bass Mono for Side-only lows → null-test → PHIXER only for leftover continuous L/R fights → Width 0% again before export.
